Disaster READY action research: Learning from accessible and inclusive communication practices in Vanuatu and Timor-Leste

Effective two-way communication is essential to ensure communities can prepare for, respond to and recover from the impacts of disasters and climate change. Yet, often the use of complex terminology and concepts as well as inadequate channels and formats of communication largely undermine access by communities, including persons with disabilities. Inaccessible or non-inclusive communication channels have drastic and wide-ranging effects on persons with disabilities.

The purpose of this study is to support Disaster READY Country Committees and partners in Timor-Leste and Vanuatu to strengthen their practices of communication to communities for greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in disaster preparedness and climate resilience efforts. The study builds on global best practice and contextual realities to identify opportunities for scaling up effective communication in context.
