“Never before had the water risen so quickly. We couldn’t keep up. Watching everything get ruined was heartbreaking.” With support from the Australian Government, Save the Children helped families move on from last year’s floods in Vietnam with cash and voucher assistance.

In Timor-Leste, early warning systems need to be informed by local knowledge to ensure they are fit for purpose and as effective in mitigating the impact of disasters.

Agustinho’s community learnt that true resilience is built by working together. “When we build gabions, we protect our farms,” he said. “When we conserve water and plant trees, we protect our future. This project has brought real change. We are no longer afraid of the floods. We have water to drink, trees to protect our soil, and savings to support our families. All we need now is to keep working together.”

After Typhoon Yagi brought heavy rain and flooding to Northern Vietnam, cash support through the AHP response helped families regroup. For 13-year-old Thanh, having money to replace damaged school books and uniforms ensured she could continue learning.

Floods in Timor-Leste in April 2021 damaged water infrastructure, leaving communities without nearby access to clean water. Through the AHP response, World Vision supported the construction of new water tanks and piping to restore access.
