Floods - Vietnam

In October 2020, the central region of Vietnam experienced a period of prolonged and heavy rain. This was due to a combination of numerous weather systems – the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone combining with cold air as well as four tropical cyclones caused severe and widespread flooding, landslides, storm surge and strong winds, affecting millions of people. As of 2 November 2020, at least 230 people had died and a further 23 were missing. Initial reports indicated damage to approximately 350,000 households, with 5,000 completely destroyed. At least 360 schools and 60 health care centres were significantly damaged.
The AHP Response
Through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership, the Australian Government committed AUD 1.1 million to support the Vietnam flood response. Plan International and World Vision, in partnership with CAN DO (ADRA Vietnam) and CARE Australia, delivered the AHP response in Vietnam.
Partners provided relief and early recovery assistance to affected communities in the three most severely affected provinces, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Tri and Quang Nam Province.
In collaboration with provincial and district-level governments, partners provided improved access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation, ensured protection for relief workers and beneficiaries, and facilitated livelihood recovery through the distribution of livelihood materials and cash and voucher-based assistance.
The AHP response was implemented over 6 months from November 2020 – May 2021 and reached more than 50,000 people.
Response highlights
3,000 female school students received dignity kits in Huong Ho and Dakrong districts
15 drinking water systems have been upgraded, supporting 2,940 school children in Huong Ho and Dakrong districts
15 spaces for children to play and learn were established, and sports equipment provided. Combined with counselling support for children, these spaces are designed to support recovery.
12 damaged toilet blocks were replaced in five schools and one kindergarten in Nam Giang District and six schools in Nam Tra My District, Quang Nam province.
Water tanks were distributed to communities affected by the floods, reaching 94% of households.
