AHP Response: World Vision Australia and Oxfam Australia, with support from their South Sudan agencies and an independent evaluation team leader completed a joint evaluation of the 2017 - 2018 AHP response to the famine in South Sudan.

The Fiji Shelter Handbook is the first of three national shelter guidelines for Fiji, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands that are being published under Disaster READY. The aim is to increase knowledge of disaster resilient construction techniques and methodologies, and safer shelter practice, as well as the capacity of responding stakeholders to deliver better coordinated, more efficient and safer disaster response and recovery construction in Fiji, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. 

Cash transfers are now widely recognised as being a cost-effective and efficient form of disaster assistance. Access to cash in the wake of a disaster empowers people to make their own choices in regards to immediate needs and it revitalises and strengthens local markets, supporting longer term recovery.

Despite the Pacific’s exposure to numerous and frequent disasters, cash assistance has not been common.

Following a dam collapse and flash flooding in Laos in 2018, CARE undertook a two-phase rapid gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) analysis in Attapeu Proince to provide information and recommendations about the different needs, capacities and coping strategies of women, men, boys and girls including people with a disability and ethnic minority groups. World Vision Australia and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology supported the Solomon Islands Meteorological Services to complete surveys of the role of traditional knowledge in warning communities of potential disasters in the Solomon Islands. The survey and this report are part of a larger Traditional Knowledge Project being implemented by the Solomon Islands Meteorological Services.

The Australian Government through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership Disaster READY program, World Vision Vanuatu and CARE developed a joint survey to take a deeper look at Community Disaster and Climate Change Committees in Vanuatu.. This review presents key findings from the survey, and seeks to highlight learnings that might build a better understanding of the role of these committee in disaster preparedness, response and recovery and how the Disaster READY program can best provide support.

Disaster READY: In 2018, Save the Children Australia led a study into the general feasibility of using cash and voucher Assistance in responding to disasters in Fiji. Funding for the study was provided by the Australian Government via the AHP.
